SSRI/Anti-Depressant Detox

SSRI Detox Program – How to Get Off of Anti-Depressants / SSRIs/SNRIs

At the Iboga House, we have had many people detox from SSRIs and SNRIs with outstanding results. Iboga contains Ibogaine which studies have shown to increase neuro-plasticity in parts of the brain as well as affect dopamine and serotonin receptors over the long term as ibogaine terns into the neurotransmitter noribogaine that stays in the body at least 4 months. These studies along with anecdotal evidence shows that one can rewire his or her brain overnight with Iboga treatment for depression. Not only does Iboga clear cellular receptor sites but it allows one to go on a deep inner journey to clear negative beliefs, criticisms, and past trauma in order to move forward in a new and free way.

Many people are taking SSRI and SNRI anti-depressants and see little to no changes with their depression. Some people end up feeling trapped due to the withdrawal symptoms they experience while trying to get off of these drugs. The medical profession calls this SSRI discontinuation syndrome and little is known to science about the subject. Some people do not feel withdrawal symptoms, but would like to cleanse their body of any residual chemicals and damage that may have occured.

Discontinuing anti-depressants can interfere with normal social and occupational functioning. This usually starts 1 to 7 days after discontinuation, but it depends on the half-life of the medication. These symptoms may last a few weeks, however, sexual dysfunction has been reported to last a year or more. The largest complaint seems to be the feeling of “brain zaps” or “brain shocks” which are described as electric shock-like sensations; especially with Effexor, Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Cymbalta, Pristiq, Zoloft and Luvux. Besides “brain zaps” and sexual dysfunction, here are a few more symptoms patients have reported: dizziness/vertigo, sweating, confusion, nausea, insomnia, temor, panic disorder, aggressiveness, nightmares, flu-like symptoms, visual and other sensory disturbances, irritability, fatigue, diarrhea, headache and dysphoria (absence of pleasure).

Here are a few anti-depressant SSRIs and SNRIs that we help people get off of and detox from:

  • Abilify Detox
  • Celexa Detox
  • Cymbalta Detox
  • Effexor Detox
  • Lexapro Detox
  • Prozac Detox
  • Seroquel
  • Vicodin Detox
  • Wellbutrin Detox
  • Zoloft Detox

  • Research thus far has not been able to reveal the exact reason for all of these symptoms. Scientists believe it is due to electrophysiological changes in the brain, particularly on the 5-HT receptor. Other possible causes are that these medications create “dopamine dependency” and then an inhibition of dompaminergic neurotrasmission. This could be why iboga and ibogaine are so successful with SSRI detoxes. Iboga and Ibogaine (one of the alkaloids in Iboga) is extremely beneficial because it resets the dopamine uptake pathways in the pleasure and craving centers of the mind that are thrown out of balance by these medications. There is no other known substance that addresses these areas with such accuracy. It is the dopamine in your brain that controls pleasure. Iboga helps correct the damage that has been done.

Here is a little information about Iboga:  The Iboga root comes from the Tabernanthe Iboga shrub native to western Central Africa. Tribes in the area practice a tradition called Bwiti, in which they use the iboga root for rites of passage, initiations and for healings. The Bwiti have used iboga for the past 1,000 years and Bwiti Shamans are considered experts on the subject. The use of iboga and ibogaine to treat opiate addiction was only recently discovered in the 1960s by a former drug addict that just happened to cure his heroin addiction by using iboga for recreational purposes. Iboga does cause some hallucinogenic symptoms in which the user may experience powerful visions. For example, many people that have used iboga have said that they experienced a life review where they were able to identify the point in time and the cause of negative thought or behavioral patterns and in turn, correct them. Thus, helping with the underlying problem that was causing the depression.

Iboga and Ibogaine are mostly used to treat and cure addictions of all kinds and to detoxify the body and mind. However, opiate addiction is not the only issue that is treated. U.S. patents exist to treat many other illnesses and conditions. Some of those conditions include: neurodegenerative disorders such as alzhiemer’s, parkinsons disease and dementia, depression, OCD, post traumatic stress disorder and criminal behavior. Many people have also reported on the successful reliief of chronic pain and chronic fatigue. Iboga also has shown powerful antifungal and antiviral properties in research studies as well.

What to Expect When Detoxing From SSRIs With Iboga

Moughenda, our 10th generation Bwiti Shaman, has had a lot of experience in handling the administration of iboga to SSRI detox patients. After the initial iboga detox the patient may be weak. It is important to stay hydrated and to eat regularly during this time, as this is the solution to the weakness. Our aftercare provider will help you through this time and keep a close eye on you. The patient will take the Iboga one more time to clean your body of any residual toxins and experience a psycho-spiritual journey where you can find out and correct the root problem. Iboga keeps working even after your departure.
