Iboga Root Alkaloids for Treating Pain

There are two indole alkaloids within the iboga root that have been studied for treating pain. The two alkaloids that have shown the highest analgesic effects are Tabernanthine and Ibogaine. This is also a reason why the use of the iboga root total alkaloid extract (TA) can be more useful than Ibogaine alone. This can be an alternative to morphine and other narcotics that have the potential to cause respiratory depression as well as addiction. In fact, iboga is considered an “anti-addictive” substance.

Metabolic plasticity and the energy economizing effect of ibogaine

Ibogaine is one alkaloid from the iboga root. The following study that can be found on PubMed (link below) demonstrates the ability of ibogaine to have an energy economizing effect and increases metabolic plasticity. This study also shows ibogaine reduces oxidative stress in the body.

The conclusion of the study is listed here:

Ibogaine triggers remodeling of the housekeeping metabolism. Under the initial energy cost it results in increased efficacy of physiological antioxidative systems, which reduce oxidative damage and lowers basal metabolic needs. Together with induced catabolic enzymes they set a new metabolic equilibrium that saves energy and makes it easily available in case of extra needs. While healthy organism profits from improved fitness and mental performance and can withstand higher stress without risking a disease, due to the same principle ibogaine provides beneficial support at the recovery after diseases including addiction syndrome.

The Iboga House Pre-Initiation with Moughenda

Cognitive Impairment and Iboga / Ibogaine

A patent application was filed in 2005 for treating and preventing neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and mild cognitive impairment with ibogaine.

Ibogaine increases levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in the brain (He & Ron 2006), and this appears to have neuroprotective properties that promote the survival of both dopaminergic and motor neurons (Bermingham et al. 2004; He and Ron 2006). GDNF can also cause sprouting of dopaminergic fibers and clinical improvement in experimental animal and human studies in which the test subjects had Parkinson’s Disease, with the resultant clinical improvement in symptoms (Love et al. 2005). GDNF has been shown to have potent neurotrophic factor in both rodent and primate models of Parkinson’s disease (Gill et al. 2003). Direct brain infusion of GDNF into the brains of five Parkinson sufferers resulted in a 39% improvement in the off-medication motor sub-score of the Unite Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and a 61% improvement in the activities of daily living sub score (Gill et al. 2003). Positron emission tomography (PET) scans of dopamine uptake showed a significant 28% increase in putamen dopamine storage after 18 months, indicating a direct effect of GDNF on dopamine function. Furthermore, after one year, no serious clinical side effects were observed (Gill et al. 2003).

Both Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease and Alzheimer’s Disease are chronic disorders with no known cure. Most neurodegenerative diseases require management with prescription medications that can have considerable side effects, which may cause a very poor quality of life for terminal sufferers. In turn, Ibogaine may be very benefical to those with degenerative neurological diseases.

The use of Iboga alkaloid extract or Ibogaine would provide a longer term and much less invasive method of GDNF administration than direct brain infusion. Thus, further research on Ibogaine and GDNF is certainly warranted. Ibogaine therapy may offer a non-invasive and low-toxicity method of treatment for sufferers of this disease.

The Iboga House and Indigenous Path are raising money to bring running water to Darlot Village in Gabon, Africa. Thirty percent of all proceeds from Indigenous Path sales (Iboga House’s sister company) will be donated to help the village. We are also accepting donations.

At the present time, elderly villagers have to walk with buckets to the water source five kilometers away and back to the village. They desperately need our help. We would like to have a complete water system installed within the next year. All Natural Hepatitis Treatment

Hepatitis C is the most common infection in the United States. The use of ibogaine for the treatment of HCV was discovered by an ibogaine activist/advocate that was infected with Hepatitis C and was self treated. In 1990 the Anti-Hepatitis C Effects were reported and in 2005 Howard Lotsof filed a patent application for the use of ibogaine to treat Hepatitis C.

More scientific studies need to be done to show the anti-Hepatitis C effects of iboga / ibogaine, but here are three cases that Lotsof has documented through his research:

Case 1:

A 33 year old male addicted to heroin and infected with Hepatitis C
Following ibogaine therapy the heroin use ceased as well as liver swelling and pain

Liver enzymes pre treatment were:

ALT: 410
AST: 201
GGT: 155

Liver enzymes post treatment were:

ALT: 50
AST: 25
GGT: 33

Case 2:

A 60 year old male infected with Hepatitis C
His HCV RNA IU/mL value pre treatment was 780,000 and post treatment was 154,000
Liver enzymes decreased as well

Case 3:

A 42 year old female infected with Hepatitis C
Her HCV RNA IU/mL value pre treatment was 12,600,000 and post treatment was 50,000
Urine and stool returned to normal color as well

Ibogaine has demonstrated a large depression in the viral load. There has also been evidence of continued reduction of the viral load after stopping ibogaine therapy. Ibogaine is also less toxic compare to current therapies. The Anti-Mycobacterial Effects of Iboga / Ibogaine

What is Mycobacterium?

Mycobacterium is a type of bacteria. The prefix “myco” means fungus, alluding to the way mycobacteria have been observed to grow in a mold-like fashion. Some mycobacterium are known to be pathogenic to humans, sometimes causing severe illness. Types of this bacteria can cause pneumonia-like infections, lymphadenitis, granulomas as well as skin ulcerations and abscesses. Other symptoms of mycobacterial infections are:

• Fever
• Night sweats
• Malaise
• Lethargy
• Cough
• Haemoptysis
• Adenopathy
• Pleuritic chest pain
• Weight loss
• Hepatomegaly
• Splenomegaly

Mycobacterium are ubiquitous. They are found in soil, food, water, and animals. Most infections appear to be acquired by ingestion, aspiration, or inoculation of the organisms from these natural sources.

Some treatment options for mycobacterial infections include:

• Antituberculous drugs – usually combination therapy and for a prolonged period of time
• Other antibiotics for atypical mycobacterial infections – usually combination therapy and for a prolonged period of time such as erythromycin, erythromycin, rifampicin, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin
• Surgical debridement of ulcers
• Drainage of mycobacterial abscesses
• Excision of infected lymph nodes

Mycobacterial infections are generally hard to treat with western medicine. However, iboga / ibogaine studies have shown the antimycobacterial activity of this powerful herb.
